rain or shine

be sure not to miss this show at SOAP, it's like nothing else...

I first met Mike at his cabin while photographing his son Sawyer. As I'm sure he is most weekends, he was out on the deck, working on his art. Many months later, I couldn't believe it when I walked into his show at the Museum of Craft and Folk Art and saw a large part of his cabin moved and reconstructed right there in the museum. I literally had no idea what I was walking into when I came to the show.

(the following text reprinted from SOAP gallery site)

Mike Shine is a bay area painter who works out of his the funky retro coastal cabin he shares as a studio/second home with his wife and their three sons - all artists. His work can be described as a colorful, sometimes disturbing mixture of driftwood, house paint, Nordic mythology, insomnia, 1970’s pop culture, absinthe, Teutonic philosophy, his wife Marianne, and woodworking skills left over from a previous life. Shine’s art explores how themes of classic mythology, philosophy and psychology relate to modern day mankind. “But in an accessible way, without the pretension, and bullshit,” he emphasizes.

Recently his cabin was recreated in its entirety for the Museum of Craft and Folk Art in San Francisco. It was also recently featured in Readymade magazine, Juxtapoz, High Fructose, Spread Art Culture, Art Ltd, and the SF Chronicle. See more of his work at shinelounge.com.
