Although being a stylist is a profession in and of itself, most of my shoots involve me being the stylist (as well as the location scout, prop stylist, hair and make-up artist, etc.) As a result, I'm always on the hunt for imaginative ways to put together outfits as well as good brands to recommend to parents. I've been working with this family for three years now when they won a bid on a photo shoot at a school auction. I photographed "C" when she was a baby, a one year old, etc. And now "C" has a little sister! We got together for a semi-newborn/sibling shoot and mom had C. decked-out in a big ol' bow. Now, I adore my clients and I want to make them happy but I was against the bow. I did a few shots and then came clean with the mom. "She's gorgeous. She doesn't need the bow. Let's lose it." Mom reluctantly went along with my suggestion. At the end, she asked that we put it back in to hold her hair back and I responded "she can wear a clip." I'm getting so bossy!

I got a referral from Stars for a portfolio shoot for a new model. I asked the mom what the earliest time was that she could meet me for the shoot. When she said 7am, I knew I had to go to Sutro Baths! I even picked-up a dress for the occasion, a gorgeous velvet shift from Peek which purchased at Nordstrom. I'm now in love with the brand!

We did four looks. Mom did some shopping of her own at the Gap and got a vivid pink wool peacoat.

Of course, it's not just the clothes that make the model, but in this case the clothes, model and location really came together beautifully.

Yesterday I found myself with an hour to kill in a mostly residential section of the Sunset. What to do? I looked ahead and what did I see? The Pacific Ocean! I was delighted to encounter a little lean-to made from rusty box-springs, covered with seagrass. I thought the bottle of rum on the roof was a nice touch. The crows were patrolling the area pretty aggressively, so it might have belonged to them.

As some of you know, I like to balance my "perfect" photos of beautiful children with some nitty gritty, imperfect street photos. I feel they have their own allure and beauty. I take most of these shots with my iphone, from my car window, or maybe with my lens baby. Cheap tricks? "White people" hipster fad photos? Sure, but I get instant gratification! It fills a need.

I recently spent a week in a cabin in the Stanislaus National Forest area. I was lucky enough to be there when most of the snow had recently melted, and the wildflowers were in full bloom. I decided to take a few shots with intentional blur/shake just to see what would happen. The first image is one I took of the flowers before I started moving the camera and/or lowering the shutter speed.

I recently took cast photos for the play "Boxcar" by Silvia Gonzalez being produced by Pacifica Spindrift Players with direction by David Acevedo. I took along my son, Otto, who is interested in photography. We both shot the cast and they liked Otto's photos better! Here are some photo overlays I created in an attempt to convey the claustrophobic and grim nature of this play based on a true story of illegal aliens trapped in a sealed boxcar during their attempt to enter the United States.

I love taking photos from my daily life. Here is one I took this afternoon. The dramatic clouds were of course the focus of the shot.

zed cards: the editorial shot

When I get a referral for a zed card (comp card) shoot, I start the process by getting a photo of the person I'll be photographing. The first step is to start thinking about styling so that the person's range of looks can be expressed. For kids, that typically means a good headshot, a commercial print look, an editorial look, and an upscale catalog look. I thought I'd share some photos of a recent session. This little girl just signed with Stars. I also photographed her little brother and sister the same day.

All models have their strengths, and for this girl it was clear that fashion editorial was the big win. Here are some examples of the shots where I was going for a more editorial look. For the first look, I used the girl's living room, which had a neutral yet opulent look and dramatic window light. The second editorial look happened more spontaneously. We were doing the last look, which is what I call "upscale catalog" (think Mini Boden, Tea Collection, etc.). There was a lovely tree with spring green/yellow foliage hanging over a sloped wall. I was able to capture that springy, sun-flared, kind of overexposed look to get a few more editorial-feeling shots. Of course, with editorials, there is not such a concern of having models look at the camera, but for zed cards, most of the shots involve eye contact with the lens.

It said that professional photos are not required to get an agent, maybe not even recommended. There are many reasons for this. The primary reason is that agents have particular photographers with whom they like to work, and also specific requirements regarding wardrobe, hair etc. Getting professional photos before getting an agent might mean that new photos will be needed, and thus more expense. That said, I get tons of calls from parents who feel that professional photos will give them an edge when seeking representation for their children. I used to tell them no outright, not wanting to exploit their eagerness to get an agent. However, I've started offering mini sessions for those parents who are willing to take the risk. Their feeling is that even if they don't get an agent, they still have some great pictures of their children, and it gives their kids experience in front of the camera. Anyway, these three cuties, who take acting classes with Giovanni Espiritu, are a recent example. And let me tell you, these kids were great to work with. Very well-behaved, but not to the point of losing their spunk or being shy. I don't think any agent would be sorry were they to sign them.

I found ten boxes of these two-sided mirrors on strings, originally from west elm, at savers thrift store on Geneva in Daly City. I wasn't sure what I'd do with them, but I had a feeling they would be fun in a shoot some day. The big mirror was acquired at the Alemeny Flea Market. I think it's from a Hyundai submarine.

This shoot was experimental to see what would happen when I worked with the mirrors. I found that he tiny square mirrors were reflecting things onto the black of the model's shirt and hair, which I liked. I also thought the mirrors looked interesting when they were out-of-focus.
